Portuguese Water Dog

Overview

What Is a Portuguese Water Dog?

The Portuguese Water Dog was developed on the Portuguese coast to work alongside fishermen β€” retrieving gear from the water, herding fish into nets, and acting as a courier between boats and shore. The breed nearly went extinct in the 20th century and was revived through the efforts of Portuguese shipping magnate Vasco BensaΓΊde and later American breeders. Today it's best known internationally for White House residence during the Obama administration β€” a visibility boost that significantly increased demand.

What the breed actually offers: an athletic, medium-sized dog that bonds closely with family, is intelligent and trainable, loves water and physical activity, and sheds minimally. The low-shedding coat is real. The allergen reduction is real (though not complete β€” see the hypoallergenic caveat). The exercise requirement is also very real.

A critical point before purchasing: ask every breeder for GM-1 Gangliosidosis and JDCM DNA test documentation for both parents. These are fatal or severe inherited diseases with available DNA tests. Any reputable breeder will have this documentation. Any breeder who cannot provide it should be avoided.

Physical

What Portuguese Water Dogs Look Like

A medium-sized, robustly built dog. Females weigh 35–50 lbs; males 42–60 lbs. Height 17–23 inches. The body is muscular and athletic β€” this was a working dog designed to swim in cold Atlantic waters all day.

The coat comes in two types: curly (tight, cylindrical curls with a matte appearance) or wavy (gentle waves with a slight sheen). Both are single-layer coats that shed minimally. Colors are black, white, brown, and combinations. Traditional show trims include the lion clip (hindquarters shaved, muzzle shaved) and the retriever clip (coat evenly trimmed short). For pet owners, most prefer a working retriever-style trim maintained by a groomer every 6–8 weeks.

Personality

Temperament

Energetic, affectionate, and people-oriented. Portuguese Water Dogs bond strongly with their family and want to be involved in household activity β€” they are not content to be background dogs. They're playful, intelligent, and generally good with children and other dogs.

The intelligence cuts both ways. These are dogs that learn quickly β€” including things you didn't intend to teach. Consistency in training matters. An under-exercised or under-stimulated Portie will find their own entertainment, which typically means destruction, counter-surfing, or persistence about whatever they want.

They are not particularly aloof with strangers β€” generally friendly and sociable. Alert without being reactive. They are natural swimmers and will take every opportunity to get wet, so keep that in mind around pools and bodies of water.

A Realistic Take

What I'd Tell a Friend Thinking About a Portuguese Water Dog

Portuguese Water Dogs are excellent dogs for active families who need a manageable size, don't want heavy shedding, and have the time to actually exercise the dog. They're smart, trainable, good with kids, and rewarding to live with.

Two things I'd make sure you understand before committing: First, the grooming cost is ongoing and unavoidable. The non-shedding coat grows continuously and requires professional trimming every 6–8 weeks for its entire life. That's $600–$1,200 per year in grooming fees on top of everything else. Budget it in from day one. Second, 'hypoallergenic' is a marketing term, not a medical one. Portuguese Water Dogs produce dander just like every other dog β€” they simply shed less of it. People with dog allergies vary enormously; some react to Porties and some don't. Spend time with the breed before committing if allergies are the primary motivation.

And regardless of any other decision: get the GM-1 and JDCM DNA test documentation from the breeder before you put down a deposit.

Daily Life

Care Requirements

Exercise

60–90 minutes of vigorous daily activity. Porties were built to work all day β€” leash walks alone won't cut it for most individuals. Swimming, fetch, agility, and off-leash play in a fenced area are ideal. A tired Portie is a calm Portie. An under-exercised one is a problem.

Grooming

Professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is non-negotiable for a consistently maintained coat. Brushing between appointments (2–3 times per week) prevents matting, especially in curly-coat individuals. The coat does not shed onto furniture, but it does mat if ignored. See the Portuguese Water Dog grooming guide for the full routine.

Training

Generally eager to please and responsive to positive reinforcement. Porties are capable of impressive performance in obedience, agility, and water work. Early training takes advantage of their intelligence; skipping it means the dog trains itself to habits you won't like.

Wellness

Health & Common Conditions

Generally a healthy breed with an 11–13 year lifespan. However, two specific inherited diseases β€” GM-1 and JDCM β€” are serious enough that breeder DNA testing is non-negotiable for responsible purchasing.

Condition What It Means
GM-1 Gangliosidosis A fatal inherited storage disease that causes progressive neurological deterioration. Autosomal recessive β€” a puppy needs two copies of the defective gene to be affected. DNA test available; responsible breeders test both parents and can demonstrate clear or carrier status. Do not purchase a puppy without this documentation. There is no treatment.
JDCM (Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy) A severe, typically fatal cardiac disease affecting young puppies. DNA test available. Responsible breeders test both parents. Ask for documentation.
PRCD-PRA (Progressive Rod-Cone Degeneration) Inherited progressive retinal degeneration leading to blindness. DNA test available; reputable breeders screen for it. No treatment currently exists.
Hip Dysplasia Less prevalent than in larger breeds but still relevant. OFA hip evaluation from breeders. Medical management in mild-to-moderate cases.

Ask breeders for: GM-1 DNA test (both parents β€” non-negotiable), JDCM DNA test (both parents β€” non-negotiable), PRCD-PRA DNA test, OFA hip clearance.

Budget

Cost of Ownership

Expense First Year Annual (ongoing)

Fit Assessment

Is a Portuguese Water Dog Right for You?

Great fit if you... Not the best fit if you...
Active households that can provide 60–90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise You work full-time with 8+ hours away from home β€” Portuguese Water Dogs need 60–90 min of consistent daily activity, and under-exercised dogs of this breed often develop destructive chewing, barking, or separation anxiety
Families with children who want an energetic, social, medium-sized dog You have a small apartment without nearby outdoor space β€” at 35–60 lbs, Portuguese Water Dogs need room to stretch and a routine of off-property exercise
Households where low-shedding is important (allergies or preference) Sedentary households that cannot provide real daily exercise
Owners who can budget for professional grooming every 6–8 weeks Anyone who believes 'hypoallergenic' means allergy-free β€” it doesn't; spend time with the breed first
People who enjoy training and working with an intelligent, responsive dog Owners not prepared for ongoing professional grooming costs

Next Steps

Finding Your Portuguese Water Dog

Buying from a Breeder

$2,000–$3,500 from reputable breeders. Required documentation: GM-1 DNA test for both parents, JDCM DNA test for both parents, PRCD-PRA DNA test, OFA hip clearance. The Portuguese Water Dog Club of America maintains a breeder referral directory. Never skip the GM-1 and JDCM verification.

Rescue

PWDCA Rescue and regional Portuguese Water Dog rescue organizations exist. Availability is limited given the breed's relative rarity.

Before your Portie comes home, complete the Portuguese Water Dog puppy checklist β€” groomer selection and first appointment scheduling belong on the pre-arrival task list.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Portuguese Water Dogs truly hypoallergenic? +

No dog is truly hypoallergenic β€” all dogs produce dander, which is the primary allergen for most allergy sufferers. Portuguese Water Dogs shed minimally, which reduces the amount of dander distributed through your home. Many people with dog allergies tolerate them better than heavy-shedding breeds. But tolerance varies significantly by individual β€” spend time with the breed before committing if allergies are the reason you're considering them.

What is GM-1 and why should I ask the breeder about it? +

GM-1 Gangliosidosis is an inherited fatal storage disease identified in Portuguese Water Dogs. It is autosomal recessive, meaning a puppy must inherit the defective gene from both parents to be affected. A DNA test exists that identifies whether each dog is clear, a carrier, or affected. Responsible breeders test both parents and can produce documentation. Never purchase a puppy from a breeder who cannot provide GM-1 DNA test results for both parents.

How much grooming do Portuguese Water Dogs actually need? +

More than most people expect. The coat doesn't shed onto furniture, but it grows continuously and mats if not brushed regularly and trimmed professionally. Plan for professional grooming appointments every 6–8 weeks for the dog's entire life, plus brushing 2–3 times per week at home between appointments. Grooming is a fixed, ongoing cost β€” budget $600–$1,200 per year.

How much exercise does a Portuguese Water Dog need? +

60–90 minutes of vigorous activity daily. This is a working dog breed built for physical labor β€” regular leash walks don't meet the need for most individuals. Swimming, fetch, agility, and off-leash play in fenced areas are ideal. An under-exercised Portie will find destructive outlets.
